Changing the World, One Lightbulb at a Time
Partly to show that I'm not a wholly biased blogger and that Wal-Mart can actually undertake positive efforts to affect social change, here's an article from Fast Company about what can happen when a titan like Wal-Mart encourages a change for the better.

How Many Lightbulbs Does it Take to Change the World? One. And You're Looking At It.

The article discusses the effects of each household in America replacing just one incandescent bulb with a "swirly" bulb, the newish compact flourescents. The energy savings are quite dramatic with just a single bulb. Now extend those returns to twenty or thirty bulbs in each house and we're talking about a real revolution.

Wal-Mart Gives Up in North Carolina
Wal-Mart Abandons Plan to Build Store in Ogden citing that it was in the best interests of the town to not build there. Not that the protests had anything to do with it or the pretty clear fact that they weren't wanted there. Nah, they did it for the people in the town.

Wal-Mart Workers Ask Judge for Some Protection
Wal-Mart Cashiers Ask Judge to Bar Threats to Workers in which Wal-Mart tries to intimidate its employees into signing statements that they were never forced to work overtime without pay. Nice, huh? Its like the school bully getting you to swear to the principal that he never beat you up, while threatening to kick your ass.

Here's an excerpt...Workers' lawyers sent out notices Aug. 4 to more than 100,000 current and former Wal-Mart and Sam's Club cashiers in Texas, inviting them to join the litigation. Wal-Mart managers asked employees to turn over the notices and sign statements that they never worked off the clock as the suit claims, according to court papers. The cashiers asked U.S. District Judge Samuel Kent to order Wal-Mart to stop ``improper communications'' with workers. A hearing on the request is set for Aug. 23.

An Example of the Loss Prevention Goon Squad's Over-Reacting
or, Death to Shoplifters! (at Wal-Mart).

This is a direct response to the latest slack-jawed defense of Wal-Mart by one its employees who didn't bother to read the post completely, didn't bother to think about what they were complaining against and think that their personal experiences are representative of the entire company (they are not).

Suspect's Death In Wal-Mart Parking Lot Raises Questions. What happened is a guy named Stacy Driver stole some stuff from Wal-Mart (yes, a crime for which he should have been punished but not by death) and was held on the hot asphalt until he died from a heat stroke. Calls from on-lookers to let him up were ignored by the Loss Prevention Goons and, by the time the police arrived, the shoplifter was no longer breathing nor did he have a pulse.

Now, refute that, Wal-Mart Defense Squad.
